Ogbourne.Net

Networking the Ogbourne villages

Swindon has an ADSL service, and so will Marlborough. While our neighbours enjoy broadband internet connections, we in the Ogbourne villages are stuck with slow dial-up or ISDN connections. Our local exchange does not even have a Trigger Point for ADSL to be enabled. As of August 23rd 2003, just 41 people had registered. So even if every house in the area expressed an interest, we would struggle to reach 350, which was the trigger point for Marlborough

The ogbourne.net domain has been registered as part of the effort to get broadband into Ogbourne Maizey, Ogbourne St.Andrew, and Ogbourne St.George. This will be a network for the Ogbourne community, with links to the wider internet.

There is, however, a solution to our problem!. Kingsbridge in South Devon has already shown how it can be done using existing and proven wireless technology. Although the Wiltshire SmartPlace initiative does not include us, Chisledon will become an ADSL-enabled exchange. That is good for us, because there is a better line-of-sight (i.e. it is flatter) to Chisledon than to Marlborough. We can get connected! All we need is one or two houses or offices, preferably one in Chisledon and one in between Chisledon and Ogbourne St.George.
